“Already proving a big fat hit with shoppers at The Forum on Walsgrave Road is stylish new arrival Skinny Cafe. And with its bright and welcoming decor and emphasis on delicious food that’s also healthy, nutritious and great value for money, this is one place that definitely seems to have found the right recipe!
The brainchild of husband-and-wife team Jamie and Danielle, Skinny Café serves a range of breakfasts, mains, sandwiches, smoothies, shakes and hot drinks, all home-made from locally-sourced ingredients and freshly-prepared to-order by chef Jo.
And if you’d rather eat at home, why not try the café’s ‘Skinny Box’ scheme and build your own meal from a range of options? You can order several meals in advance and your selections will be boxed-up in recyclable containers that can either be collected or delivered, ready for reheating at home. Perfect for after work, Skinny Boxes combine the convenience of a ready-meal with the assurance of nutritious, home-made food.
Also on the menu are cakes from Wyken-based The Brownie Box By Emily – and in keeping with the health-conscious theme, sugar-free treats like whole-wheat brownies and protein donut ‘pronuts’ are available alongside more traditionally indulgent fare.
Explaining the concept behind Skinny Café, co-owner Danielle said “Jamie and I used to travel out of Coventry a lot and always found plenty of places to get a healthy meal. But in this part of Coventry there was really nowhere we could sit down and enjoy the food we love – so we decided to open somewhere ourselves!”.
And she added “we chose The Forum because we use the gym upstairs, plus my parents live locally and my mum and sister are both employed in the kitchen”.
What followed was a steep learning curve of re-training and obtaining qualifications in an industry where neither had worked before; but was also about having the vision to convert a long-empty retail unit in this often-overlooked neighbourhood into a beautiful and unique space that has all the makings of a thriving community hub.
Because this is a place that really does have something for everyone – from mums with toddlers enjoying a natter and a coffee in the child-friendly ambience, to workman stocking up on hearty breakfasts, to gym enthusiasts looking for post-workout snacks that won’t undo all their good work.
Said Danielle “Support from the local community has been fantastic. We have free wi-fi and sockets for your laptop, and we hope we’ve created somewhere where people can relax and not feel pressured to finish up quickly and leave”.
This cafe might call itself Skinny – but its heart is very big indeed.”
