On This Day 1839: St. John’s Parish Schools foundation stone laid by benefactor Richard Rotherham.
On This Day 2008: Reverend Canon Dr Christopher John Cocksworth BA, PhD, PGCE consecrated as the 9th Bishop of Coventry.
The Rev Canon Christopher Cocksworth, a father of five boys, was named as the city’s next bishop in 2008. At the age of 49, he was the country’s youngest serving Church of England bishop.
As he was given a bird’s eye view across the city from the top of the old cathedral tower, he said to Coventry Telegraph at the time: “I look forward to immersing myself in the life of this exciting diocese and getting to know its people and communities.
“I want to be someone who encourages and supports and who helps the church to have confidence and really takes part in the community life of the county and city.”
Dr Cocksworth became the city’s ninth bishop since 1918, when the new Diocese of Coventry was created.
He took over from the Right Rev Colin Bennetts, who resigned on January 31 after 10 years in the post.
